Use brief manual screens, then return to normal varied content.

Short answer

Check black, white, red, green, and blue for about 10 seconds each; then 5% gray, 50% gray, and a gradient for about 15 seconds each. Finish with ordinary content. Do not leave bright static patterns running or repeatedly trigger a manual panel refresh.

What to look for

  • True black is useful for bright pixels on OLED because black pixels should emit no light.
  • Low gray can reveal tint, vertical bands, retained interface shapes, or near-black uniformity—not just one-pixel defects.
  • Some temporary image retention can fade with varied normal content. Persistent uneven aging is different and cannot be confirmed by one quick browser test.
  • Use the manufacturer’s built-in compensation or panel-refresh process exactly as directed for the model.
  • Skip automatic loops. Manual changes keep the test brief and let you stop if a screen is uncomfortable.

Use this order

  1. Use comfortable ordinary brightness and disable any unusual color filter only for the comparison.
  2. View black, white, red, green, and blue for roughly 10 seconds each.
  3. View 5% gray, 50% gray, and the gradient for roughly 15 seconds each.
  4. Watch ordinary varied content for about 30 seconds and note whether any retained shape remains.
  5. If something persists, save evidence and consult the exact manufacturer maintenance guidance before running a manual refresh.

Common questions

Should I run pixel refresh after every test?

No. Many OLEDs perform short compensation automatically. Longer manual refresh functions should be used only as the manufacturer directs, not repeated as a generic troubleshooting loop.

Does OLED have backlight bleed?

No. OLED pixels emit their own light and do not use an LCD backlight. Uneven dark areas can still occur, but backlight bleed is not the mechanism.
