IPS glow vs backlight bleed

If the patch follows your viewing angle, it behaves more like IPS glow.

Short answer

IPS glow often changes strongly when you move your head, change distance, or add room light. Backlight bleed tends to be a more fixed bright area near the panel edge. Both can coexist, and a browser test cannot measure either to a warranty standard.

What to look for

  • Start at the normal viewing position. Looking from very close or far off-axis can exaggerate IPS glow.
  • Move left, right, closer, and farther while watching the same corner. A shifting or fading haze points more toward viewing-angle glow.
  • Compare black with 5% gray and real dark content at normal brightness.
  • Photographs can overexpose dark screens. Match the photo as closely as possible to what you actually see.
  • Do not loosen the display, press the bezel, or massage the panel to change an edge patch.

Use this order

  1. View black from your normal seat.
  2. Move your head slowly side to side, then change distance.
  3. Add modest room light and compare again.
  4. Switch to 5% gray and a familiar dark scene.
  5. If the patch remains distracting in ordinary use, document it and check the return or support path.

Can IPS glow be normal?

Some angle-dependent glow is an expected property of IPS technology, but whether a particular display is acceptable depends on severity, real-use visibility, and the applicable return or warranty terms.

Why does my phone camera make it look worse?

Automatic exposure brightens a mostly black frame and can amplify subtle haze. Include a real-scene photo and describe the normal viewing conditions.
