Backlight bleed test

Test in conditions you actually use—not a camera-exaggerated dark room.

Short answer

At your normal seat and comfortable brightness, inspect black, 5% gray, and a real dark scene. Backlight bleed tends to look like a relatively fixed bright patch near an edge or corner. Camera exposure and a completely dark room can make it look much worse than it does in use.

What to look for

  • Use the normal picture mode, brightness, room light, and seating distance before trying an extreme test.
  • Let a new LCD warm up before judging subtle uniformity; a quick five-minute check is only screening.
  • Hold black for about 15 seconds, then compare 5% gray and a familiar dark scene.
  • Move slightly side to side and closer or farther. IPS glow changes more with angle and distance; bleed is usually more fixed.
  • OLED screens do not have an LCD backlight, so “backlight bleed” is not the right mechanism for an OLED patch.

Use this order

  1. Reset any unusual contrast or local-dimming test settings and use normal brightness.
  2. View black for about 15 seconds from your regular seat.
  3. Switch to 5% gray and note whether the same edge area remains brighter.
  4. Play a real dark scene and decide whether the patch is visible in use.
  5. Change angle and distance, then photograph the issue using an exposure close to what your eyes see.

Common questions

Should the room be completely black?

Not necessarily. Start in ordinary dim viewing conditions. A pitch-black room and long camera exposure can reveal or exaggerate things you never see in normal use.

Can a pixel fixer repair backlight bleed?

No. A moving color square targets a suspected subpixel response; it does not repair panel assembly pressure, edge lighting, or broad uniformity.
